Director of Strategy

Introduction

Ghost Note is a cross-cultural studio building brands and uncovering stories that channel the beauty and complexity of the modern, diverse world. While our roots are in DC, our team is fully remote and extends from DC to Los Angeles, NYC, and Central America. From inception, Ghost Note was purpose-built to represent and honor the intricacies of contemporary diverse audiences. For more than 10 years, we've guided story-driven brands to deeper, measurable connections with the communities we come from. Some of these clients include Nike, Apple, The Obama Foundation, Hyatt, The Smithsonian Institution, Grammarly, Meta, Anheuser-Busch, and Paramount. 

The Role

We are seeking a highly talented Director of Strategy to lead the development and management of our agency’s brand strategy and storytelling practices. As the head of our Strategy team, you will lead the auditing, refinement, and visioning behind our departmental offering and approach. You will also manage a team of strategists and lead award-winning work across our portfolio of story-driven brand clients.

Responsibilities

Execution

  • Lead development of brand strategies, story concepts, and narratives that guide the larger agency’s support of various client deliverables across brand positioning, campaign development, digital, and other project types
  • Bring and integrate experience with and deep knowledge of community-oriented strategic philosophies and theories
  • Serve as lead strategic voice and agency representative for priority clients
  • Ensure the strategic and creative outputs of the Strategy department and larger agency are maximized through effective structuring of process, client interactions, cross-department collaboration, and constructive work reviews
  • Consult with clients on a range of strategic brand and storytelling initiatives, including discovery, branding, content, social media strategy, experiential and campaign strategy
  • Shape and lead presentations that effectively articulate, document, and convey the concept and logic underlying the proposed strategies—both internally and with our client partners
  • Partner with appropriate internal stakeholders to make ongoing programmatic and project decisions, leverage insights from the team, and lead high-level strategic decision-making across a range of our project portfolio
  • Establish a presence and develop rapport with client as a subject-matter expert and advisor to select top tier accounts, acquire a true understanding of the needs of the client/assignment and act as lead liaison between the client and strategy team, should challenges or deviations to strategy or vision arise

Department Strategy

  • Clearly outline the philosophies and approaches that guide the work of the department
  • Set departmental strategy and work with Associate Director of Strategy to ensure seamless implementation across team
  • Thoroughly understand profit and loss impacts of departmental decisions and work closely with partners and CFO to ensure transparency across the agency
  • Work with COO and Business Operations Manager to document and optimize internal and cross-departmental workflows
  • Develop a staffing strategy in accordance with the available budget and projected budget to maximize outputs for current and future services
  • Work with company leadership and consider industry trends to iterate on current and position future strategy service offerings and related deliverables

Employee Management

  • Mentor team in service of maximizing their potential and experience at the agency
  • Conduct evaluative exercises in service of performance management of the department
  • Clearly set goals and provide individuals on the team with actionable plans toward their growth, professional development, and trajectory at the agency
  • Collaborate with project management to ensure that initiatives have appropriate resources for development and are ultimately delivered on time and on budget
  • Shaping of new opportunities
  • Contribute to core guiding strategies and creative concepts that focus and directly lead to winning proposals and pitches
  • Collaborate with business development and project management staff to create staff plans that ensure initiatives are being planned with the appropriate resources, approach, and estimated labor
  • Work with business development to ideate approaches and recommendations for new opportunities

Leadership

  • Work with Partners and Creative Director to ensure alignment on management and leadership approach
  • Participate in weekly leadership syncs with Partners to identify opportunities, potential issues, or roadblocks
  • Have a strong voice in shaping the culture of the agency
 

Qualifications

You have at least 15+ years of relevant professional experience. 4+ years of management experience at an agency and/or in-house brand or strategy team. You thrive on working with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced, highly creative environment. Specifically:

  • You’re a brand builder and storyteller that excels at crafting strategy, creative, and stories for large and emerging brands and institutions.
  • You’re a strong and supportive manager who leads with empathy as well as pragmatism and is passionate about helping people grow.
  • You are action-oriented and know how to use data and past experiences to make informed decisions about approaches to work.
  • You possess excellent writing skills and hold a high standard for the written word.
  • Whether with start-ups or Fortune 100s, you are adept at engaging with senior level clients and their teams to realize ambitious outcomes.
  • You have a contemporary understanding of the evolving role of brands and what it means to build brands in the modern diverse and digital age.
  • You thrive on continually innovating and modernizing brand thinking, approaches, and tools to get to the best outcome.
  • You’re skilled in or have the ambition to learn co-creation processes, and believe that working in true partnership with clients and their teams leads to the best outcomes.
 

The Nitty Gritty

  • Currently (and for the foreseeable future) this is a remote position
  • Please note that candidates must be eligible to work in the United States
  • Salary for this role is $150,000, commensurate with experience
